The English made shield walls to protect themselves from the Norman cavalry.

Both sides wore chain mail armour which gave them much protection.

Chain mail armour consists of small metal rings linked together in a pattern to form a mesh.

A coat of mail would weigh about thirty pounds, depending on length, light enough for a horse to carry without tiring, and also supple and flexiable.
