Characteristics of Tudor houses

How to spot a real Tudor house.

Tudor houses are made from a wooden framework of beams.

The timber beams on Tudor houses are uneven because they were cut by hand rather than by machine.

Can you see any clues to help you tell when this house was built?

The wooden beams can be seen on the outside of Tudor houses.

Some houses built today try and copy the Tudor style. Look carefully at the beams. You will be able to tell if they have been made by hand or by machine. Beams made by machines have a straight cut.

Throughout the following pages we show you how to spot a real Tudor house.
