 Thai Silk
Find out how silk is produced.

Thailand is famous for silk.
There are many shops selling silk around Thailand.
The photos below show the outside and inside of a Thai silk shop and how silk is produced.

From the worm to the material. How silk is produced.

The mulberry tree is very important in the production of silk.

It is the food source for the silk worms.

Silk worms feed on the large mulberry leaves until they are one month old. Then the worms build a cocoon from their spittle.

The cocoons are collected and placed in hot water. This process kills the worms. The thread (filament) from each cocoon is about 2000 feet long.

The thread is dyed and hung out to dry.

Thai Silk is woven on handlooms.

 The shuttle.
