The Northeast region of Thailand,
bordering Laos, is known as Isaan. It is the poorest part of
Thailand and the one place to visit if you really want to experience
the real Thailand. This is because few tourist visit and so the
western influences have had little affect on the region.
I visited Isaan for a few days
in October 2000. Below you can see a few of the many photographs
I took.
 |
In 1996 a number of fossilized dinosaur
bones were found in Isaan. |
Isaan is an agricultural area
with many paddy fields. Rice fields upon rice fields, all flat
for miles and miles around, spotted with trees, communities and
farm houses.
Working in the fields is a hard job and the reward is little
for the amount of effort that is put in. The workers are only
paid about two pound a day. For this, they get up early at 6
am and stand all day, backs bent, in hot muddy water.
Getting Around -transport

Most modes of transport are the
same as in other areas of Thailand. |
I saw two new kinds of transport.
