King Tut at Woodlands Junior School

The following comment was written by Dr. Annette Laing
Well done, Woodlands Junior School, in Kent, England, for a superb web site. My nine-year-old son and I read and discussed your Tutankhamun mini-site as preparation for our visit to the Tutankhamun exhibit in Atlanta, Georgia. We thoroughly enjoyed the stimulating questions, the use of extracts from archaeologist Howard Carter's actual diary, the copious pictures, and the clever approach, which helped us share in the building excitement of the discovery. Alec is now working on the assignment to create a newspaper account of the discovery (with drawings), and is showing that he could have a bright future in tabloid journalism.
Homeschoolers and teachers, I do recommend this site, not only for its content, because it also models the web-based materials that we could have children create in American history: Enjoyable, well-illustrated, and non-preachy, it's a great introduction to "King Tut", and to Ancient Egypt in general.

Talented Mathematicians!

Four children from Years 5 & 6 went to Tonbridge Girl's Grammar School today to take part in the Junior Math Challenge. We are very pleased and proud to be able to tell you that our team (Matthew, Katie, Minette and Bradley) came 3rd out of the 14 primary schools who took part! The competition was neck-and-neck until the fourth and final round. A tightly fought competition! Well done to all four children - you were shining examples; representing our school impeccably.

The day was a brilliant success and feedback from parents and children has been great!

'My child thoroughly enjoyed the Team Maths Challenge yesterday. Thank you for the opportunity - sounds like they really enjoyed it and did very well to get third place!'

Why not practise your maths skills in the Maths Zone? Who knows... maybe next year you might be picked for the team.

Myst Writing - Year 6

You may remember that earlier this year some of the children took part in the Myst writing project when Tim Rylands visited the school to introduce the children and staff to the inspirational Myst computer-generated worlds. As a response to this many of the pupils have had a chance to let their imaginations take them on writing adventures. Here are just a few examples of some Year 6 pupils' work:

Mother's Day

Mother's day in Britain is also known as Mothering Sunday. It always falls half way through Lent on Refreshment Sunday. This year Mother's Day will be on 22 March.
Mother's Day in other countries fall on different days. Most countries celebrate Mother's Day in May. Many of our visitors have shared how and when they celebrate Mother's Day in their country and so we have now created a special page on Mother's Day in other Countries.

The most visited school website in the country

According to the website popularity monitor, Hitwise UK, Woodlands Junior school has by far the most visited school website in the country. For 2008, our website was the third most popular site for an education institution, behind the University of Aberdeen and the Open University, but ahead of learndirect. There were no other school websites above us.

Our school's vision is ‘Caring about learning, proud to shine’ This is certainly evident through out our website. It was made for our students as a place for them to show off their work, their school and their community to the world. We are very proud of the fact that 18 million people a year are reading our work. Thank you:)

During 2008 the Woodlands Junior website received:
  • 30,616,362 Visits
  • 18,272,249 Absolute Unique Visitors
(Over 50,000 visitors each single day)
  • 151,228,514 Pageviews
The sheer number of worldwide visitors to our website speaks volumes of how well we are showcasing our school, and we are not even at full throttle yet! We have a lot of exciting plans that will move our school on even further. Watch this space!
