Children transported back to 1945

You may be pleased to know that World War II is over!

Year 6 spent the last day of term back in 1945. In the morning, the children experienced World War II style lessons and learnt about VE day.

The afternoon was spent celebrating the end of the War with a 'street' party. The Year 6 corridor was transformed and decorated with Union flags and bunting. Many thanks to all those who made cakes and other goodies from the 1940s for the children to enjoy.

Cycling Proficiency

Year 6 have been busy riding their bikes as part of their Cycling Proficiency. The pupils have completed a booklet and read through ‘Tales of the road’ - a leaflet supplied with important information about road signs and safety. They have learnt to signal, check for vehicles and pedestrians, and what to do in different situations when cycling alone on the road.
Everyone has thoroughly enjoyed the course!

Throughout the week, children were encouraged to visit the library and listen to different teachers read stories at lunctime.

The Moon

It is always lovely to hear how our visitors are using the website. We are amazed how useful our Moon pages are for a wide variety of people. Here are two comments we received this week about our Moon calendar :

"I am a sailor and a scientist. I used your site to plan a night time sea voyage from Grenada West Indies to British Virgin Islands so that I was sailing around the time of the full moon to light up the night time sailing. I thought the technical detail in the site was brilliant."
Dr Sue Kingsman

"I am a Captain in the Army and my current job is to test all new wheeled vehicles. We look at various aspects of the vehicle when testing them; this includes any special night vision equipment.

When testing night vision equipment it is essential that we know when the darkest nights will be and then plan our trials and tests around them. Your calendar has proved to be an invaluable asset for all my staff during the planning process, could you please pass on our thanks and congratulations on a great piece of work and let the young people know that they are contributing greatly to supplying excellent equipment to our troops serving overseas."

Year 6 visit Chatham Dockyard

On Tuesday 29th September, Year 6 visited Chatham Dockyard. Throughout the day, the children enjoyed lots of activities which involved attending different workshops. The workshops were about rationing (where the children were treated to War times foods!), walking on HMS Cavalier, dancing and singing along to War music (including Glenn Miller and Bud Flanagan), and taking shelter in one of the many underground shelters at the Dockyard.

Woodlands Flies to Space

On Monday 28th September, Peter Golding presented the Astrodome to Woodlands Junior School. He showed us different constellations and we ‘travelled’ to different planets. Throughout the ‘space travel’ he provided information and told each class facts about the exploration of space. At the end of the session, every child, who travelled to space, was presented with a certificate.
