Tickets

You must have an appropriate ticket for every journey you take on the underground.  They can be bought either from automatic ticket machines or from ticket sales offices.  You will need to use the ticket to be admitted in through the automatic barrier gates at the start of your travel and then you will need to use the ticket a second time to be allowed to leave through similar gates at the end of your journey.

How much does it cost to travel on the Tube?

The cost of using The Tube depend on which zone you start in and how many zones you need to cross. Fares vary from £4 for an adult single trip within Zone 1 -2 (which is where all the tourist attractions are), to £3.80 for an adult single trip between Zone 1 and Zone 6.

Travelcards offer better value if you will be making several journeys and they can be used on buses as well as the Tube.

An off-peak Day Travelcard for Zones 1-2 is available after 9.30am each day, for example, at £4. For this you can make as many trips as you like.

You can buy 1, 3, or 7 day Travel Cards. A three day Travel Card will cost you 20-21 pounds. For 20-21 pounds, you would only have to ride the tube 5 times to break even, which, if you are staying in London more than 2 nights, you most likely will do. London is a very spread out city, walking will get very tiresome, quickly. So save your legs for once you are inside the amazing museums and churches instead of using them to get there.

Oyster cards offer the best value for travelling. A single journey on the Tube in Zone 1 is £1.50 and £2.00 in Zone 2, when using a prepaid Oyster card. The same journey using cash is £4.
