(The plural of centuris is centuriae)
There were six centuriae (centuries) with a total of 480 fighting men (not including officers) in a cohort. The cohort was the basic fighting unit.
A centurion led each century in a cohort and a Primus pilus (a senior centurion) commanded the cohort.
Each centuria had a Signum as a standard.
| Interesting Fact |
| The first cohort had five double-strength centuriae instead of the normal six. Each century had double-strength because there were 160 men in each one instead of 80. |
Contubernium (8 men) > Centuria (80 men) > Cohort (480 men) > Legio (5,000 men)
