Newsletter 10 - 20th November 2009

I feel that I have reached a very important milestone – my tenth newsletter! How time flies…..

I was privileged, on Tuesday, to visit Knole House in Sevenoaks to take part in the culmination of a four day arts project that 6U have been participating in. The quality of their work was truly outstanding – and we are hoping to have some of it on display during our summer Open Evening. Well done 6U – and thank you to Mrs Usher for organising this.

The week has had an historical theme with Year 5 spending a wonderful day on Monday learning all about the Ancient Greeks and Year 3 visiting Lullingstone Roman Villa on Tuesday.

Headteacher Question of the Term

I have been overwhelmed with the excellent quality and imagination of the responses to my question. They are currently displayed in the school hall for all to see. Your children still have until Wednesday 2nd December to complete this. For a reminder of the question, click here.

ParentMail

You should have received home a letter giving details about how we will be developing our electronic communication with parents. This will enable us to e-mail you information and text urgent messages, should the need arise. We would like as many parents as possible to sign up for this free service. If you haven’t received an application form, please contact either your child’s teacher – or the school office.

Drumming Workshop

The whole school was delighted by a drumming display that took place in the school hall on Tuesday. If your child would enjoy learning the drums (and you can put up with all that noise!!) information should have arrived home earlier in the week. Please contact the school if you are interested and haven’t received this.

School Uniform and PE Kit

The school has always had very clear guidelines for school uniform – including P.E. kit. A few children are wearing clothes and shoes that are not uniform.

We would ask that girls only wear shoes (with straps) to school and not boots or slip-ons (these often fall off during playtimes, particularly when the children are running around). I know that many girls have already purchased these – but when replacing please follow these guidelines.

Children all need a track suit for PE – as we send them outside all through the winter, and it can be extremely cold, wet and windy. This should be plain blue or black. (I understand that they are available very cheaply from a well known sportswear chain in Tunbridge Wells.)

Athletics

Eleven children took part in a Sports Hall Athletics competition on Monday. Working in mixed age and gender teams they competed against eight local schools in Standing Long Jump, High Jump and Triple Jump, Seated Throws and Indoor Javelin. The finale comprised Relay Heats and an Under and Over Relay, in which Woodlands did extremely well. The children performed brilliantly.

Congratulations to all and thanks to the cheering parent supporters and helpers!

Eco Club

After Christmas, Eco Club will be starting a sewing project and would be grateful for donations of material, old sheets, tablecloths etc. and trimmings, lace and buttons. If you are a dab hand with a needle and would be willing to help us on Mondays (3.15 to 4.15 p.m.), please let Mrs. Brown in 5BA know.

Head Lice

We have had some cases of head lice recently. Please can you check your child’s hair regularly and treat if necessary. Thank you for your support.

O2 Tickets

If you have ordered tickets for the O2 Concert, they should be collected from Mrs. Usher after Choir on Wednesday 25th November. If you cannot pick them up then, please call into the School Office. We would prefer not to send the tickets home with the children.

Friends’ Association

The Friends would like to thank all those who have offered to help at the Christmas Fair. Further details should have come home to you by now but if you have any queries, please call Jane on 350310.

Own Clothes Day/Christmas Fair

Thank you so much for all the lovely ‘goodies’ that the children brought in this morning for the Christmas Fair. The children are already excited about this very exciting annual event and we look forward to seeing everyone next Friday (in Christmassy own-clothes). Please remember that we ask the children not to wear football kits on own-clothes days. Thank you.

For those of you new to the Junior School, the children attend in the afternoon of the fair with their class - and then are invited back after school with their parents.

Children in Need - Friday 20th November

Thank you for your generous support of this very worthwhile charity. There will also be collection buckets at the disco tonight – perhaps the children may like to donate some loose change from their pocket money?

Book Fair

Just a reminder about the Book Fair next week. The children will be viewing the books with their class on Monday 23rd and then can purchase the books on Tuesday 24th. If you would like to buy a book with your child, please visit the Book Fair between 8.30 and 8.55 on the Tuesday morning. This session is only for those children who are accompanied by an adult.

Christingle Service

Unfortunately in last week’s newsletter we made an error in the contact e-mail address. If you are interested the person to contact is markpayne123@hotmail.co.uk.

St. Andrew’s Church on Hadlow Road East invite you to join them for a Christingle Service at 3 p.m. on Sunday 6th December.

And Finally….

I look forward to seeing you and your children at the disco tonight – I have been practising my dance moves in preparation…………...
