A pictorial guide to the River Thames

How the Thames Barrier Works

The barrier is a series of ten separate rotating gates positioned end-to-end across the river.

Each gate is attached to concrete piers that house the operating equipment.

When there are high tides, with high waves caused by storms, the gates are lifted to stop water travelling up the Thames estuary.

The gate lies below the river bed.
