What is the Numeracy Hour?

Numeracy Hour in England
and Year Group Objectives.

In September 1999, as part of its commitment to raising educational standards, the government launched the National Numeracy Strategy in primary schools throughout England and Wales. Every school is expected to provide a daily maths lesson of 45 minutes to 1 hour for all pupils of primary age. In these lessons, teachers are expected to teach the whole class together for a high proportion of the time with a significant focus on oral and mental calculation

 The daily Numeracy (mathematics) lesson
is divided up into three parts.

  • oral work and mental calculation (about 5 to 10 minutes) whole-class work to rehearse, sharpen and develop mental and oral skills
  • the main teaching activity (about 30 to 40 minutes) teaching input and pupil activities work as a whole class, in groups, in pairs or as individuals
  • a plenary to round off the lesson (about 10 to 15 minutes)
work with the whole class to sort out misconceptions and identify progress, to summarise key facts and ideas and what to remember, to make links to other work and discuss the next steps, and to set work to do at home

Lessons focus on whole-class teaching with a strong emphasis on mental calculation. Pupils are given the opportunity to explain their answers and suggest new ways of tackling problems.

The main objectives for each Year group are:

Year 3

  Year 4

  Year 5

  Year 6
