The Tonbridge Arts Festival this year had the theme Rivers. Talented artists from Tonbridge Primary Schools each painted one of 221 tiles which was used to put together a version of the famous painting The Lady of Shalott by John William Waterhouse which can be seen in the Tate Britain. This project was called The Big Picture and measured 5.2m x 4m (17' x 13'). The artist Mike Insley who co-ordinated the project had the picture under wraps until the big day when all was revealed to the public for the first time.
In addition to The Big Picture, 125 children from 6 Tonbridge Primary Schools opened the Tonbridge Arts Festival with a song called A River's Tale, specially chosen to fit in with the festival theme. The children who had been learning the songs in their respective schools since September, sang together in perfect harmony for the first time at the opening.
A huge thank you to Mrs Littlejohn for co-ordinating the artwork and of course the children for painting them. Also to Mrs Usher for the wonderful singing and bringing all the schools together as one huge choir.
We hope you enjoy looking at a selection of our photos.
