Whilst visiting classes this week I have been lucky enough to see the children participating in reading activities and groups in the classroom. I heard some really thoughtful discussions - particularly from our Year 6 children. Well done to both the children and their teachers!
Reading is so important and developing that love of books is key to ensuring that your child develops as a reader and a writer.
As parents we all lead such busy lives that it is sometimes easy to forget to spend time reading to our children – not just hearing them read. I hope that you will join with me in making time for both this weekend.
On Tuesday the whole school were treated to the inside story of the Three Little Pigs by 5B. The children devised a variety of questions that they felt the story did not address and then, together, came up with possible answers. For example: how did the wolf know he could huff and puff a house down? One group decided that he was running a marathon and was just out of breath and asking for a glass of water! The children performed beautifully and produced masks and props in their own time. We were delighted to have so many parents, friends and relatives in the audience. Thank you to everyone who was involved in making this assembly the success it was.
We are aware of a story that appeared in today’s Courier about a local resident. Although a picture of the school sign was used to demonstrate where the resident lives, I would like to reassure you that we have no connections with the person named. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you would like further information. Thank you.
Mrs Brownell spent a wonderful day with several Y5 writers and the author Roy Apps yesterday. The children thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity and produced some really exciting writing.
Year 6 teachers will be holding an Information Evening for parents of children in the year group at 7.15 pm in the School Hall.
We will be spending time in every class next week discussing how children can keep themselves safe when using electronic communication – for example on the internet and when using mobile phones. Please don’t forget that Mrs Easto has arranged for the Kent E-Safety Officer to come into school and talk to parents about the issues surrounding this. Please put the date in your diary - Tuesday 30th March at 6.30 pm – further details will follow.
We would like to open our library to the children at lunchtime and wondered whether anyone would be willing to volunteer to help us with this. Please call into the school office or write a note in your child’s Homework Diary if you could spare the odd half an hour. Thank you.
Do you play chess? Could you spare half an hour on a Friday lunch time? Mrs Rees-Porter is looking for volunteers to pit their wits against our talented chess players. Please let her know via the School Office or Homework Diary if you are up for the challenge!
It’s that time of year again – Sainsbury’s have launched their ‘Active Kids’ vouchers which we will be collecting in a box in the entrance hall. We use them to buy playground equipment for the children. Your support in collecting these vouchers will be welcome.
Children in Years 3 and 4 took part in a Swimming Gala at Tonbridge Pool last night. They all swam brilliantly and came home with lots and lots of gold and silver medals - which they showed us in assembly today. All the children were a credit to the school – thank you to Miss Tye for organising this and accompanying the children.
Every day in school is important – but the beginning of a new school year in September is vital. It is the time of year when teachers establish teaching groups, routines and structures and expectations connected with homework, P.E. kit, etc. We therefore strongly advise parents not to book holidays during the first two weeks of September. As stated on the current holiday form, these holidays will not usually be authorised.
The children raised £305.45 for the Haiti Earthquake Appeal last week. Thank you so much for supporting us with this very worthwhile appeal.
Katy, Keziah, Cassie, Amy and Lucy, all from 6R, ran a stall also raising money for Haiti. They collected £57.17.
On Saturday, Joshua’s Toy Sale at the Methodist Church raised a brilliant £300 to help towards the building of a primary school in Uganda. Well done!
The ideas come from the Food Standards Website (www.eatwell.gov.uk) and are age appropriately balanced. This week, how about:
- BLT (French bread with bacon, lettuce and tomato)
- Drinking yoghurt
- Mixed Seeds and Dried Apricots
- Grapes
Bon Appetit!
Unfortunately our A and B teams were let down at the last minute by the opposition so we decided to play against each other. The final score was 8-0 to the A team. I’m sure they only stayed for the squash and biscuits! Nevertheless, thank you to all the parents who came to watch.
Week 3 at the Central Venue League saw more success for the Woodlands A Team. Congratulations to the boys who once again pulled off two wins. Our first match was a very tightly fought game against Cage Green that required the boys to keep their nerve for a 3-1 win. Our second match against East Peckham was less tough and the boys won 15-0! What never ceases to amaze me is the determination and effort shown by the players each week – they work so well together and are a fine example of what teamwork is all about.
Msporti will be running six courses throughout the February half-term. For more information on venues and cost, visit their website on www.msporti.com. If you book online, you save 10%. Alternatively ring Dan on 07921 924936 or Glyn on 07917 417712.

Sackville School is hosting an Open Day on Saturday 6th March between 10.00 a.m. and 1 p.m and an Open Morning on Wednesday 12th May (tours at 9.15 and 10.15) . Please phone the school on 01732 836401 to reserve a place on one of the tours.
Enjoy the weekend – especially sharing a good book with your child!
