Newsletter 20 - 12th February 2010

As we headed towards the end of term 3 this week, I began to think that we would end the term as we had started it - with lots of snow. Luckily it missed us this time and although I think that the children may have been disappointed I know that the staff (and maybe you!) were relieved….

The children have been discussing ways to keep safe on the internet and when using mobile phones. Why don’t you ask them what they have learned – I know that I was surprised at how much they all know – and how little we, as parents, know in comparison. Don’t forget that Mrs Easto has planned an awareness evening for parents on Tuesday 30th March to help us keep up with them!

Spring Concert

We were treated to a magnificent concert in the school hall today by our orchestra and the Year 5 and Year 6 children who receive drumming lessons. The sound they made was absolutely remarkable and the rest of the school was really enthralled. Thank you to Miss Jaggard, Miss Ryder and Mrs Usher for organising this. Photographs will be appearing on the school website soon.

Hillview Visit

Girls from Hillview School visited our Year 6 children on Monday to perform a specially written drama about the transition to Secondary School and issues around e-safety. They gave a marvellous performance which both children and staff really enjoyed.

Year 5 Visit to Skinners Academy

Those of you with children in Year 5 will no doubt have heard about the wonderful day the children had on Tuesday when they visited Skinners Academy in Tunbridge Wells. They participated in a superb variety of activities and brought back the most amazing landscapes that they had created during an art lesson. Mrs Littlejohn is displaying some of these in the Upper Hub – if you have a chance, do please pop in to see them.

Gold Star Assembly

I was invited by Ms Morgan to visit the Infant School this morning in order to hand out the gold stars in their celebration assembly – and what a lovely job this was. It enabled me to meet all of the children – but especially the Year 2 children who will be joining us in September.

Science Day – Bouncy Balls Needed…..

You should all have received home a letter about the exciting Science Day which Mrs Brown has planned. As part of the investigations the children will carry out, bouncy balls will be needed. If you have any at home please could you send them in with your child on the first day back after the holiday? Thank you.

Y6 SATs Meeting – Thursday 25th February

Year 6 teachers will be holding an Information Evening for parents of children in the year group at 7.15 pm in the School Hall.

Parent Consultation Letters

A letter has been sent home this week about Parent Consultations on Wednesday 3rd and Thursday 4th March. Please call into school if you haven’t received one from your child. We do hope to see every parent during these consultations as it is vital that we work together to support your child. Their books will be available to look at outside the classroom before your consultation so please allow enough time to have a good look! Thank you.

ParentMail

We are soon to “go live” with our ParentMail system which means that it is essential you keep them up-to-date with your contact details. If you have a change of phone number (whether mobile or landline) or e-mail address, please let them know as soon as possible – otherwise you may miss any important messages coming out. Just a reminder at this stage too that once we are running the system, the Newsletter will only come home in paper form to those parents who have not registered with ParentMail. If you are on ParentMail, you will receive it by e-mail. We will let you know the start date soon!

Computer Club

The Computer Club sessions have now finished. All children will be receiving a new booking slip next term to request a place for the next Computer Club starting in a few weeks’ time. Priority will be given to children who have not already had a place at the Club otherwise places will be offered on a first come first served basis.

Chess Club

A huge thank you from Mrs Rees-Porter for the offers of help she has received.

Sporting News!

Swimming Gala

Woodlands Junior School were invited to take part in an inter-district swimming gala last Saturday. It was a great night and the children swam really well in each of their races. Chris D had particular success as he was awarded a trophy for outstanding individual effort, congratulations Chris. Thank you to the children and their parents for giving up their precious Saturday evening!

Football

The A Team had more success this week winning 8–0 against St.Stephens in a friendly match played at home. Congratulations again to all of the boys who at one point were playing whilst it was snowing!

Netball

Firstly, a big well done to the teams for braving the snow and biting wind to play against St. Stephens on Wednesday. The A Team won 6-3 while the B Team lost a closely fought match to 3-1. It was especially nice to see so many parents coming to support us.

Charity Stall

Well done to Holly, Jessica, Zoe, Molly and Samuel of 5BA who raised an impressive £34.63 for the World Wildlife Fund.

Healthy Lunchbox Ideas

The ideas come from the Food Standards Website (www.eatwell.gov.uk) and are age appropriately balanced. This week, how about:

Bon Appetit!

Eco Club

Please remember to bring wellies with you to Eco Club next term if you are going to be joining in the litter picking and gardening duties!

Charity Bike Ride

On Sunday 11th April, the Mayor is holding a Charity Bike Ride to raise money for Carers’ First and Age Concern. The event will start at 11.00 a.m. using the Tonbridge to Penshurst Cycle Route. Entry costs £2 for a single entry or £5 for teams/families plus £10 minimum sponsorship. For a Registration Pack, call 01732 876005 or e-mail mayors.office@tmbc.gov.uk. Forms may also be downloaded from www.tmbc.gov.uk.

And Finally….

I would like to wish you a happy half-term break and look forward to seeing all the children bright-eyed and bushy tailed on Tuesday 23rd February.

Headteacher
