Newsletter 23 - 12th March 2010

We come to the end of another busy and exciting week at school. It has been a pleasure taking visitors around this week. Every classroom I have visited has been full of engaged, happy learners. Mrs Pitt, from the Schools' Advisory Service commented on the lovely atmosphere throughout the school. In fact this is always commented on by visitors – your children really are a credit to you.

Road Safety Assembly

The children in all year groups participated in a Road Safety assembly on Monday. It was a very thought provoking experience and covered not just crossing the road but also keeping safe on a bike. All the children listened beautifully. Thank you to Mr. Childs for organising this.

Kent Primary Languages – Silver Award Accreditation

We are very proud to have been presented with a silver award for teaching Modern Foreign Languages – in our case, French. An enormous thank you to Mrs Anacleto for all her hard work. Merci!

Eco-Green Flag Award

It's been a busy week for accreditations – we also had our Eco "Green" status renewed. Thank you to Mrs Brown and the Eco Club members and helpers. Apparently the children who talked to the Eco
Schools' representative did a wonderful job. Brilliant!

Sport Relief – 19th March 2010

In order to raise money for Sport Relief the children are being asked to run a mile (at school) dressed as their favourite Olympic sports person. For a small contribution of £1, your child can dress as an Olympic competitor (don't forget to check that their chosen hero has actually taken part in an Olympics whether it be Winter or Summer!) Our hope is to raise money for Sport Relief and raise awareness of the importance of the Olympic Games – especially as they are coming to London in 2012! The children can dress as their favourite sports person for the day but please make sure that they have their trainers with them for when they do their run.

Earth Hour 2010

Eco Club is trying to draw attention to WWF's Earth Hour this year which will take place on Saturday 27th March 2010 between 20h30 and 21h30.

One billion people took part in this world-wide event last year. For one hour, participants switch off all electricity in their homes/businesses. Why don't we all try this at home?

ParentMail

We are now ready to use our ParentMail messaging system –in fact we have already used the text messaging service on Thursday to notify parents that Strings Club had been cancelled. From next week, the Newsletter will be e-mailed to all parents who have registered with ParentMail. It will also, as usual, be available on the school’s website. Paper copies will continue to be sent home to parents who have not registered but we are really hoping to keep that to a minimum so if you have not yet confirmed that you would like to join ParentMail, please contact the School Office. All we need is an e-mail address which will be used to forward letters and newsletters and a mobile phone number which would be used to text you more urgent messages such as cancellation of after-school clubs or school closures.

Charity Stall

Well done to Jessica, Tanya-Jean, Caitlin, Alice and Carla-Jane who ran a stall for the NSPCC. They
managed to raise an impressive £8.55.

We Are The Champions!

The football team’s final results are listed below; suffice to say that Woodlands ‘A’ Team won their
league as did Woodlands ‘B’ Team! What a fantastic finish to weeks of dedicated hard work by the boys. They have regularly turned up for their matches; no team member has ever missed a game. Their teamwork and commitment to their sport has been phenomenal!

Mrs Kennedy would like to thank the boys and their parents, grandparents, aunties and uncles; in fact anyone who supported the boys each week and stood with her for a few hours in the freezing cold and sometimes rain too! Congratulations again boys – we are all very proud!!

Woodlands ‘A’ Team Vs Hadlow ‘A’ 7 – 2
Woodlands ‘B’ Team Vs Sussex Rd ‘B’ 7 - 1
Woodlands ‘B’ Team Vs Slade ‘B’ 4 – 1.

Cross Country

On a freezing cold afternoon our children competed in cross country races at The Schools at Somerhill. Against 12 local schools the children were in races involving up to 60 other competitors. Our children looked incredibly smart in the school's new sports kit. Thank you to Mrs Chalklin and all the parents who were so supportive.

A special thank you to all the competitors who ran so well and represented the school so brilliantly.

Healthy Lunchbox Ideas

The ideas come from the Food Standards Website (www.eatwell.gov.uk) and are age appropriately balanced. This week, how about:

Bon Appetit!

Board of Governors

May we remind you that on the Notice Board in the lobby by the School Office are photos and information about each of our Governors. Further details about the work of the Governing Body is on the school?s website under Main School Page or click here.

Spring Book Fair

Just a quick reminder that the Spring Book Fair is taking place on Monday 15th and Tuesday 16th March.  The Book Day Vouchers which will have already come home with the children may be used at this event.

Safety on the Roads

Another reminder please: do not drive your car up the hill to the school gates – spaces on the hill are rarely available and the dangers to our children of cars turning at the top of the hill cannot be over-emphasised. Could we ask you to always park at the bottom of the hill and walk up to the school from there.

Message from Evie in Year 5

“A few weeks ago, I wrote to the Council about setting up a helpline to solve the problem of vandalism. On Monday I got a reply. They said there is already a helpline for reporting graffiti and this is 01732 876060. Also Crimestoppers has a helpline for reporting all vandalism and that number is 0800 555111.”

Tonbridge School Holiday Courses

Details of Tonbridge School's Easter and Summer Holiday Courses are available on 01732 304268 or via their e-mail facilities@tonbridge-school.org. Alternatively, the School Office has a few leaflets.

And Finally….

I do hope that all the Mums, Nans and Grans have a lovely day on Sunday.

Headteacher Question

More and more wonderful answers to this question are pouring in.  We even had some food to sample, this week –lovely cheese puffs –they were absolutely delicious.  I also received a fantastic leaflet about the more unusual food s that has been eaten through the ages –how about stuffed dormice? –apparently a favourite with the Romans!

Here is a reminder of the question, the deadline is March 24th:

***** Headteacher’s Question of the Term – Spring 2010 *****

The theme for the second question this year is ‘Food Around the World’. What can you find out about the foods that are eaten in different parts of the world?

- What are the most unusual things that are eaten in different countries?
- Choose a country and find out about the food that is eaten- what is a typical menu there?
- Choose one type of food – for example mushrooms and find out all about them – which ones can be eaten? What mushroom recipes do you know?
- Where in the world does the food we eat, in this country, come from?

Present your findings in an exciting and eye-catching way. Surprise me...
- Make a model
- Write a leaflet
- Design a poster
